What is literacy?

Literacy is the ability to use language, reading, and writing to engage and make meaning with the world around us. Literacy is composed of 4 interwoven strands: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These 4 strands provide human beings the ability to engage and make meaning with the world.

Why is it important?

Literacy is crucial for humans because it’s fundamental to our personal well being. It helps us make sense of the world and develop socially and cognitively. Furthermore, it is necessary for success in our world. All educational subjects and careers require listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Literacy is a tool that all humans deserve to have, be confident with, and succeed with!
