Literacy Tutoring Services
Reading
Reading is one of the essential skills needed to make meaning with our world. We provide reading support and/or enrichment in the five areas needed to be a successful reader. The five areas are: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Comprehension is the goal of reading and each stage builds on each other to ensure that children gain the foundational knowledge to be confident and successful readers. Furthermore, since we know how important reading is we offer weekly book club meetings.
Writing
Writing is an alternative form for expression. We provide writing support and/or enrichment for children wishing to use writing to communicate. Not all children are comfortable conveying their ideas through speech. Writing provides an alternative means for people to express themselves and ideas. We aid children in making sure they realize how powerful writing is by helping them understand the writing process (brainstorm, draft. revise, edit) and by helping them learn the different purposes of writing (narrative, explanatory, persuasive).
Spelling
Spelling is a complicated process that is not given as much attention to as reading or writing. We provide spelling support in a unique manner. Many children often enjoy the process of writing, but deny wanting to engage in it because of the amount of effort required with spelling. Jump into literacy wants to show children that spelling can be enjoyable. We do this by using patterns and phonics to teach spelling and only encourage memorization for sight words (words that have no phonics or pattern relationships).
Grammar
Grammar is a subcomponent of writing. In order for children’s writing to be as effective as possible, they need to use grammar appropriately. Grammar consists of punctuation, parts of speech, sentence types, and sentence structure. We provide support and/or enrichment in all of the above grammar areas.
Organization
Schooling requires students to engage in organization. This can be something as simple as keeping our desk space tidy or something more complicated like taking our thoughts and putting them into writing or extrapolating meaning from a textbook. Many students who have ADHD or executive functioning issues may struggle with the organization skills necessary to succeed with learning. We provide organizational support to children. We help students enhance their organizational abilities by teaching them practical skills that they will be able to use.
English as a second language
Our world is becoming a melting pot of different cultures and languages. In 2016, twenty-two percent of children spoke a language other than English at home. Moreover, English is recognized as a language needed for career success. We help children who want, are in the process, and/or interested in building their English language skills. We provide reading, writing, and conversational support.
